Our Mission Statement:

"To assist people of disability to realize and appreciate that we are PEOPLE FIRST and our disabilities are secondary and that we are equal citizens in our communities"

People First is a statewide, national, and international private, non-profit self-advocacy organization for people with disabilities. Our local chapter, People First of Skagit County, Washington, holds regular meetings at Skagit Valley College. We provide leadership and self-advocacy training, education about disability issues, techniques for problem solving and developing and setting chapter goals.

People First of Skagit also believes in having fun, helping others, participating in the community through fairs, special projects and fundraisers. For many years now People First of Skagit has sponsored dances that are held at Skagit Valley College and are free and open to the public. These dances have been a great success and are now held each month from September through May. Our Christmas dance is very special as we give everyone who attends a gift bag of goodies and treats.

People First of Skagit hosts the annual Region 3 Legislative Reception. This provides a forum for an exchange of information with officials from all levels of government and local leaders regarding concerns about disability issues including housing, transportation, employment needs, and health care.
